Sin

Sin is anything you say, do, or think that is displeasing to God. If obedience is living out of love for God, disobedience is living out of love of self. To sin means to make a choice in a moment that disagrees or contradicts the life and attitude God shows us. It's as if you're saying to the Creator of the world, 'I know better'. Romans 3:23 and 5:12 tells us we are all sinful. Every one of us has made a decision to say, be, or do something that disobeys the Lord's commands and His ways. Disobedience (sin) has its consequences, including separation from God.

Sin is what keeps us from being close with God. A perfect God cannot be joined with imperfection. Our sin separates us from our Creator. The only way to reconcile us is to make us holy (perfect) again. Jesus took our sins on Himself when He died on the cross and gave us His perfection. Our sins were removed and we are now holy (perfect) in God's eyes. (Colossians 1:22)

Why is sin important to understand?

  1. We must understand our sin to see the need for a Savior.
  2. Identifying our sin allows us the opportunity to change our behavior.
  3. Admitting our sin reminds us of God's perfection and our humble place before Him.

The good news comes from I John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, the Lord is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
